Minnesota is latest to settle with e-cigarette maker Juul

The state of Minnesota has reached a legal settlement with Juul Labs and tobacco company Altria in a lawsuit over the e-cigarette manufacturer's role in the youth vaping epidemic. Only days earlier, Juul had announced its largest settlement so far. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison was seeking more than $100 million in damages from the companies, similar to the precedent Juul has established with previous settlements, and claims his actions were for the best interest of Minnesotans. The terms of the settlement will be kept confidential until formal papers are publicly filed with the court in 30 days. This marks the first of thousands of cases against Juul to reach trial. Juul has previously settled with 48 states and territories, providing over $1 billion to combat underage use and develop cessation programs. The company is currently appealing the FDA's rejection of its application to keep selling its vaping products as a smoking alternative for adults and has pledged to not market their products to anyone under the age of 35. Ellison concluded by celebrating Minnesota’s record low rates of young smokers and pledging to contribute to  the downward trend of nicotine addiction. Juul has only continued to struggle, facing new lawsuits consistently and is hoping to finish their long history of legal battles.
