Like many human rights issues, abortion continues to be one of America’s most controversial topics. Alexandra Martinez paints an image of the heart-breaking reality that women do not have rights in this country. Titled, “Breaking: Texas judge reverses FDA abortion pill approval”, Martinez introduces the reader to the horror of male authority figures wanting complete control of bodies that are not their own. Martinez introduces the reader to Trump-appointed federal Texas judge, Matthew Kacsmaryk, the man behind the suspension of the abortion pill- Mifepristone. Approved by the FDA for over 20 years, access to the pill was abruptly revoked due to Judge Kacsmaryk’s unprecedented decision in the midst of the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
According to the Guttmacher Institute, “... 98% of medication abortions in the United States in 2020 used a regimen of mifepristone and misoprostol in combination, misoprostol can be used on its own to end a pregnancy.” As abortion access gets more limited throughout the country, we are forced to witness the repercussions of Roe v Wade’s overturning.
Despite our social progress , Americans are faced with pushback from our own government officials as they ignore the fundamental necessities we demand as citizens. With the spread of anti-abortion rhetoric and human rights violations committed by officials, the future feels bleak. However, we must stay informed of current issues and fight for our rights.
