The suspect in a deadly shooting targeting Minnesota Democratic lawmakers, Vance Boelter, had previously served on a state board alongside one of the victims, Senator John Hoffman. Boelter, 57, was appointed multiple times to the Workforce Development Board by Democratic governors, including Tim Walz and Mark Dayton. While records show he and Hoffman attended a virtual meeting in 2022, investigators have yet to determine the nature of their relationship.
Boelter allegedly disguised himself as a police officer before attacking the homes of Senator Hoffman and Representative Melissa Hortman, fatally shooting Hortman and her husband, and injuring Hoffman and his wife. He remains at large. Authorities have confirmed the existence of a target list containing names of other Democratic officials, including Senator Tina Smith.
Boelter’s background is eclectic and difficult to verify. He has held positions ranging from gas station manager to CEO of a company in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His security firm, Praetorian Guard, offers armed patrols and uses vehicles resembling police SUVs. The firm’s website makes sweeping claims about Boelter’s experience in global security and corporate leadership, though many details lack corroboration.
His public statements and sermons reveal socially conservative views, including criticism of LGBTQ+ identities. Despite listing no formal party affiliation, Boelter has expressed strong opinions about American politics and the importance of voting, particularly during the 2018 election cycle. The attack has raised questions about political violence, the vetting of individuals in public service roles, and the intersection of personal ideology with access to firearms and security infrastructure.
