There’s No Such Thing as a Casual Interaction With Your Doctor Anymore

The pandemic has allowed for the rise in the practice of telemedicine, an accessible source of healthcare via virtual appointments or even simple text messages in between appointments making healthcare available to more Americans. Even though the pandemic is no longer seen as a major threat, telemedicine still remains popular amongst the masses; overwhelming the already packed schedules of healthcare practitioners to the extent where they will now begin to charge for this more casual form of healthcare. Most doctors are paid for the amount of work they get done, so they mark these emails and texts and phone calls as “relative value units” for payment. Recognizing these telecommunications as work allows doctors to be compensated for their overtime work without the fear of losing billable hours or being able to provide adequate care. Some insurance companies provide little to no coverage for this, causing individuals to pay $180 for a 5-minute call for clarification with their doctor. These communications aren’t new, but the charge is a direct response to the demand created by the pandemic. A major critique of this rising field of medicine is the corporatization of care making health and wellness a less empathetic interaction and more transactional.
