In Greece, Another Tourist Found Dead Amid Scorching Heat Wave

Greek authorities reported on Monday that the body of a missing 67-year-old German man was found near the Tripiti Gorge on Crete, marking the latest fatality among tourists undertaking strenuous hikes in extreme heat. The man, who contacted his wife on Sunday saying he felt ill and had run out of water, was located using his cellphone signal. His body was discovered in rugged terrain by a drone on Sunday evening, and it took several hours for responders to reach the site early Monday.

This incident adds to a series of similar fatalities this year, with at least ten tourists either missing or found dead during hikes amid Greece's unusually early and severe heat waves. Temperatures have frequently surpassed 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). Recent deaths include an 80-year-old Belgian man, a 70-year-old Dutchman, a 70-year-old Frenchwoman, and a 74-year-old Dutch hiker on various Greek islands. Notably, British medical journalist Michael Mosley’s remains were found on Symi after he disappeared during a hike in extreme heat on June 9.

Three more tourists remain missing: Albert Calibet, a 59-year-old dual US-French national on Amorgos since June 11, and two Frenchwomen, aged 73 and 64, on Sikinos since June 14. The likelihood of rescuing them diminishes daily as decomposition accelerates in the intense heat.

Hiking in extreme temperatures has proven increasingly perilous, with many becoming disoriented. While Greek authorities issue heat warnings, there are typically no bans on hiking or visiting historic sites. Due to the heat, however, schools in Athens were closed, and visiting hours to ancient sites like the Acropolis were restricted earlier this month. Meanwhile, Greek firefighters are battling wildfires fueled by days of high temperatures, dried brush, and strong winds across the islands and mainland, exacerbating the country’s current crisis.
